A Chance to Feel Normal

The worst thing you can do for your spiritually gifted child is to tell them that what they are seeing, hearing and feeling isn’t real. This causes them to fear their ability and even to shut it down. It’s the main reason many adults can’t “see” what their kids see. Someone told them it wasn’t real when they were kids. 

If your cultural or religious beliefs don’t include spiritual gifts, that’s fine. Please just don’t tell them they’re not seeing (hearing, experiencing) anything. You might suggest that what they are seeing isn’t in line with what you believe and that you can’t (see, feel, hear etc) what they are sensing, but you believe that they could be. 

Lack of support from adults is the main reason kids lose touch with their gifts. Support doesn’t have to be buying spiritual books and teaching them to use their gifts. Simply validating that they may be seeing something and allowing them to share it with you without you scolding them based on your beliefs is enough to allow them to keep that part of them in tact.  

Why would you want to allow them to preserve something you don’t want to foster? Because their gifts will resurface again in adulthood and it’s generally not a GENTLE experience. You can gift your child the ability to avoid an intensely uncomfortable spiritual awakening as an adult. 

You can deny what they’re sharing with you, but it’ll just resurface later on and it is usually a rough time. Much more difficult than in childhood. Something to consider.  

I was not supported in childhood with my spiritual gifts. I was told I was hearing things, seeing things. Most of it I didn’t share for fear of being thought I was crazy! 

As a child, I thought everyone could see what I saw. I was humiliated by other children who didn’t understand and I felt weird and alone. You can’t shelter your child from everything, but why not explain that others (including you) may not  experience the same things? 

Give your spiritually gifted child a chance to feel normal and understood. It could be one of the most important things you’ll ever do for them.
