If you’re like me, you are fine accepting things that make common sense, especially if you have experienced them to be true. And, if you’re also like me, it’s even better when scientists and doctors agree with what you already believe.
Today, I’ll share a few books that have shaped my understanding of being an Empath and energy healing work.
If you’ve missed my definition of Empaths, we are people who have a heightened response to sensory stimuli (light, sound, etc.) in their environment, just like other highly sensitive people. And, like many highly sensitive people, we are able to sense the emotions (and sometimes thoughts) of the living beings (people, animals, and/or plants etc.) around us.
Empaths can be overstimulated after spending time in large crowds, noisy shopping centers and listening to a lot of talking.
Something additional that Empaths can do that some highly sensitive people cannot is our ability to actually internalize some of the information we are sensing. For example, beyond feeling someone’s strong emotion like anger, we can actually absorb some of that person’s angry energy.
If an Empath is unaware that they have absorbed someone's emotional energy, they may think that they have suddenly become angry or that their personal mood has changed.
There are several scientists, psychologists, and medical professionals who have studied emotional energy (remember, thoughts are also energy) in the body and its effects. Here are a few books that I have checked out and recommend for you:
The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk, MD
This book discusses in detail how everyone’s body (not just Empaths) holds onto trauma and that it must be released in order to heal. If the energy is not released, we can get stuck in a cycle where our interactions are affected by the lingering energy. As Empaths, we can also get others’ emotions trapped in our bodies. Fun times.
Dr. van der Kolk explains that the body holds painful emotional energy as a record for us to address and heal, not to carry around for decades! He discusses how the body and mind are actually transformed by trauma and how healing can restore us.
The Emotion Code by Dr. Bradley Nelson
Dr. Nelson created an energy healing modality called the Emotion Code where emotions trapped in the body can be released. He taught that the energy of negative emotion can be released and the body-mind system can heal, when given the chance. I am trained and certified in this modality and use it, as well as other systems, every day to help clients and loved ones.
Any one who has ever been in a car accident, had a broken heart, experienced divorce or a major financial loss has emotional energy to release.
While passing time may make you less conscious of the emotion that is trapped, the energy is still active within your subconscious and affecting your actions and beliefs.
Becoming Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing the Uncommon by Dr. Joe Dispenza
This New York Times Bestselling Author shares his exhaustive medical research on how the brain is affected by the energy of emotions and beliefs and how you can rewrite your story, no matter how bleak or painful it has been. He has even developed meditations and exercises (outside of the book) to shake you out of an old pattern or belief system.
And, last but not least, a great book on grounding:
Basic Psychic Development: A User’s Guide to Auras, Chakras and Clairvoyance by John Friedlander and Gloria Hemsher.
This book is great for learning to ground your energy! It contains my favorite method for grounding in detail and it works very well. There are, of course, other topics and information, but the grounding method is so straightforward and effective I couldn’t offer this list without including this book. If you haven't found a grounding technique that has worked for you, I suggest this one.
I highly recommend all of these books! Validation is nice, but results are even better! I encourage you to check out a few and see what you find. If you see something that resonates with you, please share it with me! I love hearing about the energy of emotions and energy release. They’re some of my favorite subjects!
